　　Over the past century, all kinds of unfairness and discrimination have been condemned or made illegal. But one insidious form continues to thrive: alphabetism. This, for those as yet unaware of such a disadvantage, refers to discrimination against those whose surnames begin with a letter in the lower half of the alphabet.

Less well known is the advantage that Adam Abbott has in life over Zoë Zysman. English names are fairly evenly spread between the halves of the alphabet. Yet a suspiciously large number of top people have surnames beginning with letters between A and K.

　　It has long been known that...“人们一直知道...”;firm“公司”;have a big advantage over“相比...有巨大优势”;thumb through“浏览，翻查”;phone directory“电话簿”。Less well known is the advantage that...正常语序应该是the advantage that... is less well known。fairly“相当”;evenly“均匀地”;suspiciously“怀疑地”，作者态度题往往会出现suspicious这个词;a suspiciously large number of可以表示“数量之多令人心生怀疑”;top people“上层人物，人士”。

　　respectively“分别地，各自地”;predecessor“前任，前辈”;striking“引人注目的”，在这里可以表示“令人震惊的”;character“字符”，这个词的常见含义是“性格，特征”。
