　　Certainly people do not seem less interested in success and its signs now than formerly. ..., but such items do not seem less in demand today than a decade or two years ago. What has happened is that people cannot confess fully to their dreams ... lest they be thought pushing, acquisitive and vulgar. Instead, we are treated to fine hypocritical spectacles, which now more than ever seem in ample supply: ... whose own children are enrolled in private schools... not so exceptional, the proper formulation is, “Succeed at all costs but avoid appearing ambitious.”

　　“当然，如今人们对成功及其各种标志的兴趣似乎不亚于以往。”item“物品”;in demand“非常需要的”，也可以表示“受欢迎的”;confess to“对...坦白”;lest“唯恐，以免”;pushing“富有进取心的”，结合语境，应该含有贬义色彩，引申为“急功近利的”;acquisitive“贪得无厌的”;vulgar“低俗的”;instead“相反”;we are treated to fine hypocritical spectacles“我们目睹了精心策划的虚伪表象”;冒号后补充说明冒号前，如果不认识hypocritical，可以根据冒号后内容推断;另外，冒号后用两个分号连接三个并列句，语义并列，看懂其一即可;be enrolled in“入学”，也可以表示“入伍”;exceptional“异常的，例外的”;formulation“陈述，诠释”;at all costs“不惜任何代价”。

　　The attacks on ambition are many and come from various angles; its public defenders are few and unimpressive, where they are not extremely unattractive... This does not mean that ambition is at an end, that people no longer feel its stirrings and promptings, but only that, no longer openly honored, it is less openly professed... or made sly... as usual, the majority of earnest people trying to get on in life.
